Top-10 design mistakes in web-applications

According to Jakob Nielsen, these are the 10 most common usability violations found in web applications:

1. Non-standard interface controls, such as home-grown scrollbars
2. Inconsistency in the way things work, appear and are labelled across the app
3. No providing proper affordances that give people visual clues about what they can do with an object (e.g. that they can drag-and-drop an object)
4. Not giving proper feedback about what is happening
5. Bad error messages that don’t tell what went wrong and how to fix it
6. Asking for the same information twice
7. Not providing defaults (e.g. in a list of radio buttons)
8. Dumping users into the app without giving them an idea of how it works
9. Not indicating how collected information will be used
10. Offering system-centric features that reflect the system’s internal view rather than the users

And generous as Jakob is, he also has a bonus mistake: Reset buttons on web forms.

You just need to use the tool bar to format the text, then they will give the css output on the right box.

Chroma Wallpapers

This tutorial explains how to create a energetic, vibrant, colorful wallpaper, like the ones available at Color Charge. These lines, which we’ll call Chroma were highly inspired by the iPod Nano Ad from 2006 and some Quantum Chromodynamics nerdery stuff. You will learn how to bend blurry shapes with Warp tool to draw the lines, beams, and steams. Then you’ll know how to add some glowing and vibrating color effects, and finally polish your drawing. Aside reading this tutorial, you’ll need Photoshop CS2 or CS3, and preferably a computer with a lot of memory and a larger screen to achieve that effect.

CSS: The All-Expandable Box

In HTML, if you don’t specify a specific width, block-level elements are vertically expandable by their nature. Think of an unordered list. That list will grow be be as big as it needs to be to fit all of it’s list elements. If a user increases the font size in their browser, the list will expand vertically, growing to fit the larger content. Sometimes it feels like vertical-only expansion is limiting and it would be nice if the element could grow horizontally as well as vertically with a font size increase by the user.

CSS Layout Technique – Achieving 100% Height

One of the most common layouts on the web is a fixed width site that stretches to the bottom of the page, with a footer sitting at the bottom. If the content of the page stretches past the bottom, the site container needs to stretch with it. If the content does not fill the page, the footer needs to remain at the bottom. With a table based layout, this would be a simple task, but who wants to use tables for layout? With some nifty CSS tricks we can accomplish this very well using CSS alone and once you know how its done, you will use it over and over again.
